mixin' it up

i have always classified myself as having preppy style.
lilly pulitzer? check
multiple striped tees? check

buut recently i have been changing up my style a little bit.
i find myself going into new stores and trying new things.
don't get me wrong, i'm definitely still a preppy girl at heart
but i'm starting to add "artsier" pieces to my closet
i don't think it's necessary for me to only dress one style.
i can be preppy & artsy
i will be preppy & artsy

here's what kind of style i'm loving lately :

1/2/3

obviously these outfits aren't the opposite of preppy. in fact they still can be classified as preppy!
i'm not pulling a full 360 on you guys and changing completely who i am, i just don't want to be the "cookie-cutter" version of preppy if that makes sense (not that i ever was;) )
basically what i'm saying is that i can wear whatever i want to wear whenever i want to wear it.
and so can you!
it's ok to be preppy today and artsy tomorrow, you could even be full on hipster tomorrow
that's the beauty of fashion - it represents you!

how would you describe your fashion sense?

born in the wrong generation

have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the 50s, 60s, or 70s?
what it would be like to live in a world of poodle skirts, bell bottoms, or just plain retro vibes?

i have.
countless times.

1/ 2 / 3 / 4

i was about 8 when i saw Grease for the first time, and since then i've probably watched it 30 times.
no joke.
i love the songs, the characters, but most importantly i love the idea of the 50s.
i like the idea of drive in movie theaters, cute little diners where the waitresses know all the high school students by name, and the idea of waiting by the home phone for a boy to call & no texting.

it seems like such a magical time. although i do believe in women being strong and independent, i do believe that boys and men should hold a door open. i believe that they should pay for the meal (at least on the first few dates), and I think the 50s is the time where chivalry was at it's peak.

sometimes when i can't sleep at night i just imagine what it would be like if i was living in the 50s right now. what i would be doing and what my friends would be like.
weird i know, but the 50s just sound fabulous.

what time period do you imagine yourself in?
are you a 50s girl like me?

trend spotting : socks

hey there!

winter time is a time of coziness, and when it comes to dressing cute you still want to be cozy while staying on trend.
lately i have been seeing a lot of over the knee socks worn with boots, and i'm slightly in love! socks are a super easy accessory, and can surprisingly add a lot to an outfit.

here's an example of a cute/cozy over the knee sock outfit :

I've always loved socks peeking out of boots, but i've always been a little afraid of wearing over the knee socks! seeing these super cute pictures on pinterest, though, have definitely changed my opinion on over the knee socks!
i think they look fantastic both pulled all the way up or scrunched down where they are right at your knee.

either way, socks are the best! here are some of my favorites lately :

Where are your favorite socks from?

lounge wear : thanksgiving style

this year has flown by.

as you know, thanksgiving is this week.
here are a few inspirational outfits that i've put together for this years thanksgiving feast.
keep in mind all of them are extremely comfortable and that you can eat as much food as you want to, without having to worry about having to roll out the door.
it's lounge wear thanksgiving style, y'all

and we CAN'T forget about black friday!
pretty much the best friday of the year!
keep in mind that on black friday you want clothes that are easy to take on an off if you plan on trying anything on.
leggings are the best pants, because you can try things on on top of them!
flats are also the best, so you can run from store to store and they are easy to take on and off if you want to try shoes on (which we all want to do)
here's what i'm thinking about wearing this year :

what do you plan on wearing for thanksgiving and/or black friday?

endless summer sale haul!

when i found out that the endless summer sale was going on, i freaked out! recently, i have been obsessing over everything lilly pulitzer (i'm blaming tumblr). my mom thinks that it's just a phase i'm going through, but i told her that i have loved lilly before i even knew what it was (which is true) and that this is really the first year that i have been able to afford it on my own (also true).
i think i showed her who's going through a phase;)
but in all seriousness, i don't think that lilly pulitzer will ever go out of style, and i really do think that lilly pieces are staple pieces!

so without further adieu here is what i picked up from the ESS!

wait, i just have one more thing to say...
i said above that this is the first year that i can really afford to buy lilly on my own, which is true but i really like my money to stay in my wallet. i don't mind splurging on nice things, but i really really think about what i'm buying and i never overspend which i love about myself!
that being said, i only bought two things.

ok, now here is what i bought!!

first of all, how cute is the package it came in?!

somerset dress in hey sailor
original price : $108
sale price : $39

briar skirt in resort white spritz
original price : $98
sale price : $24 (great deal!)

it fits perfectly, and literally feels like i'm wearing pajamas.
if you're in the market for a new dress, i totally recommend this one!

my skirt is in dire need of being ironed, but i am in love with it!
as some of y'all know, i had been eyeing this skirt on Re-Lilly for quite some time,
but i'm glad i didn't spend the extra $$!

all in all, i really like what i purchased. part of me wished that i had bought a few more things, but the other part of me is saying "yay, now you have left over spending money for fall clothes!!"

and because the site crashed, and there was a lot of trouble actually purchasing things, the lilly team gifted people an item! i was lucky enough to receive this keychain, which is to die for!! i think another gift was little shift ornaments!

did you buy anything from the sale?
are you a saver, a spender, or a little of both like me?

youtube is a boredom buster

do you ever find yourself staring at your computer screen thinking "i'm so bored" or "i want to entertain myself without having to walk to the tv or click to often". if so then i have a solution!! if not, then i'm proud of you for (a. not being lazy and (b. for doing something productive! i have recently started watching youtube on a daily basis, and it is very addictive! i usually watch beauty gurus, and today i want to share some of my favorite gurus with you!! here's a list, and each name will link you back to their youtube chanel

ARose186 -- arden is probably my favorite you tuber, because she isn't trying to be something she's not (not that every one on youtube is). she is super quirky, and hilarious. also, she puts her boyfriend in a couple of her videos, and they are literally the cutest couple i have ever seen!
HauteBrilliance -- aspyn's video's are so fun to watch, and she always talks about something interesting. whether it be a DIY or a haul, everything is fun to watch!
JLovesMac1 -- the title of jarmaine's videos always seem as if they are going to be super boring, but they are all great! she puts her own sense of humor into every video, and her style is great!
meganheartsmakeup -- megan is just an all around perfect girl! she's super sweet and her videos are great! she's only 16 years old, but holds herself as a 20 year old.
meghanrosette -- meghan is HILARIOUS! i love her sense of style, and how she talks about real life problems & gives her viewers real life tips!
sarahbelle93x -- i love how she puts her own twist on all things preppy. she seems like a really sweet girl, she's super funny, and is really good at editing!
thesummerhood -- this isn't a makeup related channel, but i am still in love with it (and the update everyday since it's a collab channel!)

do you have a youtuber that i need to know about?

cheap chic 2.0

hey ya'll! i have receive some great feed back on my cheap chic post, and have decided that i will do another one! i have been absolutely loving all the new (and old) collections that have been put out this summer. even though i am in love with them, i unfortunately don't have enough mula to spend on them! so here are a few items that i love, and their long lost (cheaper) twins! hopefully this post will save you a few paychecks!

1. as most you y'all know, color blocking is really in for the summertime. i guess you could say that my style is minimalistic, and therefore i only color block with little things such as clutches! they are such a great way to color block your out fit without going overboard, and when/if color blocking goes out of style, you can still use this accessory in your wardrobe! all in all, clutches are a timeless piece no matter what color you choose!
find the dsw clutch here
find the marc jacobs clutch here

2. maxi skirts are probably one of my newest favorite things. i used to wear long skirts when i was in elementary school (trend setter or nerd?), and so when the maxi skirt trend came out i was reluctant to try it out. but, recently  (yesterday) i randomly started liking them again! i like when they hit right at your ankle so you can still see your shoes, and it also makes you look a little taller. also, some maxi skirts can double as dresses and beach cover ups, so if you find the right one it can be used in multiple ways! all in all, maxi skirts are a great staple piece to go in your closet for the summer time, and can also be a transition piece for the fall time!

find the old navy skirt here
find the eileen fisher skirt here

3. jean vests are hot on the market right now! i honestly think that if you wear them with the right things then they can instantly become preppy. i think that most preppy people are afraid to wear them because they are afraid they look to grungy. i have yet to find one in a store that doesn't look to "masculine" on me, but as soon as i find on that i like, i will definitely be purchasing it! let me know if you would like to see how i would style my jean vest if i had one!

find the gap vest here

thanks so much for reading!
if you would like to see more cheap chic posts, then let me know and i'll be happy to do more!
also, if you have any steals that you've found lately let me know!

cupcake wars and fashion advice

cupcake wars:
today my brother and i thought it would be super fun if we made s'mores cupcakes together. since i was allowed to use the oven, we have always loved baking together! we have made a ton of different things, but our specialty is cake pops! i'd like to think we've gone pro in the cake pop industry.
but for these cupcakes, we used betty crocker chocolate cake mix, and just followed the directions on the box. then we thought it would be genius to make marshmallow frosting, instead of putting the marshmallows into the cupcake itself (we did a few tester cupcakes with the marshmallows actually inside to see if we missed out. the marshmallows burned. we didn't miss out.). we used the first frosting recipe we found on google, but we probably should have chosen a different one because our icing ended up not having an flavor. i'm talking no flavor at all. it literally tasted like you're eating tasteless fluff. good fluff though. well as good as tasteless fluff gets...
here are some pictures from our day in the kitchen
...

that's my brother being a goofball in the bottom left corner
and in the bottom right corner you can see the burnt marshmallow inside the cupcake,  quality picture needless to say

fashion advice:

style icons

lately i have been looking at a lot of fashion magazines, and every time i see a cute outfit i want to try to  copy it! even though i don't have a budget like many of the actresses and tv stars do, there are a ton of cheaper alternatives out there you just have to keep your eyes open! polyvore is a great tool for any blogger, because it allows you to make "sets" which can be outfits or really anything! i really suggest that you go check it out if you need a free styling software (i'm making it sound a lot more professional than it probably is).
anyways here are three of my favorite fashion icons outfits that i love, and cheaper alternatives to their very fashionable outfits!!

1. selena gomez. yes she's a disney star, and yes i like her outfits. every since she stared on wizards of waverly place, i have been obsessed with her outfits. selena gomez always looks put together in an "alternative prep" way. if that makes sense at all. i guess it's just that she dresses her age, without going over board.

2. the olsen twins. i have loved the olsen twins since before i can remember. i was obsessed with full house and then when they were teenagers i watched every single one of their movies. and just recently i rented one from iTunes and fell in love with them again. they have such great style even though i won't wear what they wear, because it's out of my comfort zone. i do take some of their ideas and incorporate them into my own closet though!!

3. last but certainly not least, kate middleton. i mean do i even have to say why i like her fashion so much? she is the epitome of classic. she is just a bundle of perfect. she is to prep as macaroni is to cheese. if i could choose someone to be best friends with/share a closet with/share a home with/be part of someone's family it would be kate middleton no questions asked.
kate. middleton. is. per. fect.
perfect.

thanks so much for reading! let me know who your style icon(s) are!
